A routine trip to the mall ended in tragedy as a man was killed trying to stop suspects from fleeing attempted robbery. His wife was with him when the incident occurred.
SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s office released the name of the only fatality from the Rolling Oaks Mall shooting. He was Jonathan Murphy and he was 42.
According to ABC News Murphy was at the mall with his wife to get their wedding rings cleaned.
Chris Cercone, Murphy’s stepdaughter’s boyfriend stated that the Murphy’s loved each other “as much as any couple I’ve ever seen.” He continued on saying “I just think they were happy…every single day.”
The shooting started out as a robbery, according to news sources, of a Kay Jeweler’s store. The San Antonio Police Department reported that Murphy attempted to intervene but was shot and killed by one of the suspects. That’s when a concealed carry permit holding Good Samaritan stepped in and shot the the criminal who had killed Murphy.
Jason Michael Prieto, 34, was apprehended and identified by police as the second suspect who ran through the mall opening fire and injuring others.
The injured suspects identity has not been released but he is in critical condition in the hospital.
